Thoughts on Bo...from his foster mom

Posted January 17, 2008 10:17 pm
When Bo came to us on November 8th, he was a mess. Because he had Demodectic Mange, about 3/4 of his hair was missing and was replaced by cuts, scratches and scabs. He was at least 20 pounds underweight, with skin just hanging from his ribs and backbone. He had open sores on the pads of his feet and blisters between his toes, which made walking very uncomfortable. When he tried to stand on 3 legs to urinate, he would fall over. He was very weak, with very little muscle tone. In spite of all this, he was neither aggressive nor passive (as I had expected). He just wanted to be loved.
Fast forward 2 months... With mange medicine everyday, antibiotics, vitamins and 3 or 4 meals a day - he is now mange-free; over 50 pounds; and is growing hair everywhere.
He is a very nice boy, with a few behavioral issues (just like all bulldogs I have owned). He gets along well with our 17 year old cat, our 2 year old lab-mix, and our 1 year old bulldog; as well as our daughter's 4 pound toy fox terrier. He is totally house trained and sleeps in a crate at night. He has no problem staying in his crate when we leave the house. He is not food aggressive or toy aggressive, but does like to "play rough" - which we discourage. He will jump up on people, when excited. He needs exercise, at least a leash walk everyday.
He wants to stay within 6 inches of his humans at all times. If we go out, he goes out. If we go in the bathroom, he goes in the bathroom. If we sit on the couch, he wants to sit on the couch, etc. This can be annoying, but this is who he is.
I think he has been trained somewhere along the line, because he will "heel" perfectly on a leash. He will sit (for food, of course). He has a problem with "drop it", but we are working on that. Right now, he is sleeping on the rug - next to our bulldog, who is chewing on a bone.
Bo needs someone who will allow him to be "attached" to them, and who will love him
unconditionally. If we didn't already have 2 dogs and a cat, that would be us!
He has had enough bad experiences in his short life, it is time for some fun!
Here's a pic of Bo with his foster sister, Clem. (Look! They are holding hands :))

A little late, but here's Bo in the Christmas spirit!

A word from Bo's foster dad...

Bo has become much better (during interaction/play time with other dogs), he does wrestle very hard but we have found that by either providing an alternative, such as another play activity or just simple corrective action in a pro-active manner, can correct this situation (the rough play). "Bolo is a very loving dog that obviously is starved for affection. He likes to "shadow" your activities and "loves to kiss and hug on you." Someone who has love in their hearts that appreciates reciprocation will certainly get it from Bolo."

Great News Update:

More info about Bolo...

... he plays really rough and bites REALLY hard. I let Bolo wrestle around with my boy, Brutis, and by the end of it, Bru was a slobbery mess. Now, anyone reading this that has bulldogs knows that's just "normal bullie stuff," but those not used to this kind of behavior should be aware. ;) Bolo loves to bite onto the extra scruff on the neck and hanging skin flaps. After 20 minutes of bullie wrestling fun, I had to physically separate the two boys to give them time to catch their breath. They had tons of fun, but Bolo does have to be monitored during play becuase of his rough tendencies.
